We are planning to start using the IRS TIN Matching . . .
Question
We are planning to start using the IRS TIN Matching Program. If we use that program, are we still required to obtain W-9s from our vendors or can we keep a log of the responses we get from the TIN Matching system?
Answer
The IRS TIN Matching Program tells you whether the name-TIN combination your payee provided is a match with a valid name-TIN combination in government files. It is a validation of information you obtained on a Form W-9, but not a substitute for Form W-9. The TIN Matching Program cannot simply tell you what a payee's TIN is.
