Interpreting TIN Match Program Results

Question

Hi. My company utualizes the free IRS TIN matching system and what I would like to know is recently I had many records come back with a "2" result which in IRS terms means " TIN entered is not currently issued". What does this actually mean and when contacting the payee to request a W-9, what should one say to explain what the issue is? Thank you.

Answer

A “TIN entered is not currently issued” response means the TIN cannot be found in either IRS or SSA records. In essence, it means the TIN does not exist because it has never been assigned. There are a few steps you can take in working through this issue with your payee.
