There continues to be tremendous interest from those interested in what kind of questions we handle via our TIR Answer Center subscriber service.

Question #1:

Is a software license a copyright, royalty, or a copyrighted article? If it's a copyrighted article, it should not be reportable, right? If a royalty, what kind of royalty? Why royality if it's not being resold?

Question #2:

If a vendor submits a Form W-8ECI, is part I question 5 (business address in the US) required?

Question #3:

Are payments for subscriptions reportable for Form 1099-MISC purposes?

Question #4:

What box should a reportable hotel payment (staying overnight, not renting a meeting room) be recorded in, Box 1 or Box 7? I have heard/read both answers and want to be sure we are reporting in the correct box.

Question #5:

When a company does business in multiple states using the same company name and tax identification number, do you create separate 1099s for each state or do you combine them and report the total amount on one 1099?
