IRS Ramping Up Hiring of Enforcement Staff

You may have heard budgetary difficulties have precluded the IRS from maintaining the level of enforcement activity that it would like. However, if you are a medium to large size organization this is not only misleading - but if you are careless in your compliance efforts you can easily face penalty or audit.

This is for a number of reasons. Not least of which the IRS' relocation of it's enforcement efforts where they can make the biggest impact. That means coporations, LLC's, hospitals, universities, colleges, foundations, and more are all under greater scrutiny than during the past couple of years. And this scrutiny is about to get worse.

Earlier this month the IRS announced they are now accepting applications for a number of enforcement positions around the country. The IRS will be hiring 600-700 revenue agents, revenue officers, tax compliance officers, and tax examiners. As of May 9th all of these jobs have been posted at IRS.gov.

This is just another of the many reasons why your Form 1099/1042-S compliance season must be a good one. Remember, the IRS has accelerated the filing schedule for next year's 1099 season, and taken away a big part of your ability to get extensions. Please make sure you are ready. Otherwise the chances will be greater than ever that you will face increased B-Notices, penalty notices, or audits.
