IRS Enforcement Budget Up As 1099 Support Services Face Further Cuts

Earlier today National TaxPayer Advocate Nina Olson released her latest report to Congress regarding the state of IRS services - and it's not pretty.

In short, if your organization has 1099 related filing and due diligence questions then don't expect answers from the IRS. According to Olson's new report; " IRS telephone assistors during the recent filing season answered just 25 percent of taxpayer calls enterprise-wide."

Moreover, things are not about to get any better. According to Olson; "While the Administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year (FY) 2020 requested an increase of 5.0 percent for enforcement, it requested a decrease of 6.6 percent in taxpayer services funding."

That's right. If you are working in Accounts Payable or Tax, then in the year to come you can expect even greater IRS scrutiny regarding your organization's 1099 due diligence and filing activities. Furthermore, and against that gloomy backdrop, please note that IRS penalty notice season begins in roughly one month.
