IRS Announces It Will No Longer Answer Tax Law Questions

Bad news for filers seeking IRS guidance on filing Forms 1099 and 1042-S. On January 14, 2015 National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson announced the IRS will not be providing guidance on meeting information reporting filing, compliance, and due diligence requirements under the law.

Olson lays out the problems in her annual report to Congress. In particular she focuses on the drastic drop-off in IRS response time for organizations seeking assistance with tax law questions. To wit her report highlights how in 2004 the IRS answered 87% of calls from taxpayers such as Accounts Payable professionals, and did so in a timely fashion. But today she anticipates that during the upcoming filing season for TY2014 the IRS will NOT answer any tax-law questions except “basic” ones. In addition after the filing season, it will NOT answer any tax-law questions at all, and it has ELIMINATED tax prep assistance.
