IRS Announces 1099 Crack Down on Businesses and Other Large Organizations

Last week the IRS announced the hire of 3,700 new employees specifically to target compliance (featuring 1099/1042-S related compliance in particular).

Worse yet, the IRS is specifically looking to hire experienced accountants. As we all know, the more relevant experience of a new hire then the quicker they can ramp up into becoming a formidable examiner. The IRS states that "the hiring will be for higher-graded revenue agents, which are specialized technical positions that generally focus on audits."

These are positions at the General Schedule GS-13 level in the federal civil service system, which translates into an annual salary of about $125,000. GS-13 revenue agents serve as technical experts in examinations of significant and complicated tax compliance issues. Their cases typically concern the most complex income tax returns filed by individuals, organizations and other entities, including those with extensive subsidiaries with operations of national or international scope.

It's not accountants being hired either, people working in financial services are being recruited as having the relevant education, experience and skills. This recruitment drive is exactly being targeted at addressing the complex 1099/1042-S filing issues we help our clients with on a daily basis at TIR Consulting.
